Nuchal translucency Scan
The nuchal translucency scan can be performed from pregnancy week 11+4 to 14+0. The crown-rump length (CRL) must be between 45 and 84 mm for the risk calculation.
In addition to assessing the risk of chromosomal abnormalities, we also perform a thorough examination of the fetus. At this stage, we can already observe details that indicate whether development is progressing as it should. Using this method, approximately 90% of fetuses with Down syndrome can be detected.

The scan is performed on the abdomen. The fetus must be positioned in a specific way to obtain accurate measurements, which can take some time, so 45 minutes are allocated for the scan. We check whether the fetus’s development matches the gestational age and also confirm the number of fetuses (for example, if there are twins). We look for early signs of anomalies, and the nuchal fold thickness is measured – it should be below 4.5 mm.

The Double Test is an analysis of the protein PAPP-A and the hormone β-hCG. These are produced by the placenta and can therefore be detected in a blood sample from the pregnant person. The Double Test can be performed from week 8+0 to 13+6.

A risk assessment is calculated based on the following:
- Nuchal fold thickness
- The age of the pregnant person
- The Double Test
Other factors such as smoking, BMI, and fetal heart rate. With a nuchal translucency scan including the Double Test, approximately 90% of fetuses with Down syndrome can be detected.
The threshold for being offered further testing is 1:300 for T21 and 1:150 for both T18 and T13. If your result shows increased risk, we will refer you for follow-up at your local hospital. We’ll assist you with the referral process.
Yes. We use the same software for risk calculation as the hospitals. Moreover, most of our staff still work at regional hospitals or have many years of experience there. This ensures that you receive the same high professional quality for the examination.
You can therefore also come to our clinic if you don’t have a Danish CPR number and are not yet offered the examination at the hospital.
